The TGIF Run

Each run is a test of endurance. Heavy rain, strong wind, too hot, some dinners and something would just pop up to make you want to stop running. And if you wonder what's trying to stop me from a run today?

Curry.

Each step I took, felt like chilli doing somersaults in my tummy. The burning sensation made me wanna stop but I managed 10km. So just don't eat curry if you plan to run.

BUT something will pop up again tomorrow because life is like a box of chocolate.

Just don't give in and keep moving.

I could run the same place a hundred times and it will never look the same. Here is one spectacular sunset. I love Penang. :)

The Office Dinner Run

This was a day when I had to attend an office dinner. I was heavy hearted to sacrifice my one hour run as I could only afford 30 mins' run. The office dinner was held at 6.30pm. Heck, better than no runs at all.
The best part was I managed to complete 5.4km in 30 minutes. Hurray!

A Run with My Bro

Happy to have my ex-colleague texting me, "Hey, I'm running at Straits Quay now."

I rushed to the scene and found that he finished his 5km routine. Hungry, I fed myself a piece of bread from the pastry shop. Off I ran for an hour.

When I started it was drizzling. That shall not water down my spirit. Turned out the drizzle stop. Let's call that, mind games.

It's quite hard to believe that I've only done 8.4km in one hour. Really have no idea if the Nike GPS app is accurate. This is a day I feel my distance being short-changed.

Against the Wind Run

Running in the evening by Straits Quay. Do not be deceived, the wind was so strong, it was tough to run against the wind.
In preparation of the Yangon Marathon 2013, I started some trainings. What is supposed to be a one hour run a day turned out all right. I ran for 60 minutes - sort of - with some distractions while running like the strong wind and a dead tree and new shoes.

Looks like I need to get used to the cushion of the Nike Lunar Glide 4 since I have been on Skechers GoRun's minimalism. Running on Nike Lunar Glide 4 felt clumsy and I could hear the sound as my foot lands each time. All right, adjustment takes time. That said, the shoes feel really light and looks great to me.

This is probably the first time, I ever ran against such strong wind. I could smell the salty air and felt the humidity. It's a sign that the world changes every day. :)
Fully aware and alert!
Couldn't help feeling distracted by the sight of a dead tree.

Penang Bridge International Marathon - 18 November 2012

Before the run, with Niza and friends
The goal for 2012 was clear - to attempt a full marathon. It was not without challenges. The first eight months of this year was full of pain, wounds and subsequent scars - literally and emotionally.

On the bright side, I had insisted that pain back then was delusional that the dark clouds would eventually clear up for dawn to set in.

Wow, I was terrified of the marathon. I didn't train enough, definitely did not log up to 30km a week. I can only say I managed to pull through.

This is truly a medal of honor, sweat and pain but it's all worth it. The joy is indescribable.
Tada! B01963 shall report to the starting line.
Huff puff, what a relief to cross the finish line.
Here we were posing with our medals at the finish line.
A photo with a guy in a banana suit! Lol.
Another group of friends whom I had breakfast with later in the day. We each had a different view of the run but couldn't help feeling blessed that we completed it safely.

The cert is here. First full marathon completed in 06:20:32.58.

10 Thoughts of My First Full Marathon

Date: 18 November 2012
Flag Off: 2 am
Completion: 6 hours 20 mins
Rank: 242/452
  1. Like any virgins, I was scared to death but I am alive.
  2. I wasn't alone in doing this. I started running back in February 2011 and I ran alone for the first 6 months. By the time I did my full marathon, I had many friends to run with me.
  3. 42km is surprisingly, a run-able distance.
  4. The last 5km was a true pain in the ass.
  5. What got me going was my breathing. I bet I had never focused any harder in my life.
  6. My medal, it finally felt like a medal of honor, of much sweat and pain and endurance.
  7. I did not suffer much sore at all - surprisingly.
  8. For the first time, I choked on my tears while running. I cried 3 times in the last 3 km.
  9. Running a marathon doesn't make me an iron lady, it reaffirms that I am in every way flesh and blood. I have emotions, I felt pain, weariness but mostly, I have a big appetite. :)
  10. It wasn't about the finish. It wasn't about the speed. It's about living my life to the fullest. Making meaning for myself and setting my worth and finding every reason to be grateful that I am alive and breathing. Loving a life worth living and overcoming the odds.
My certificate

Finished finally

The Last of My 8km Run

Courage is like fixed deposit or the last of my assets. I don't use it out until I've run out of my liquid cash. On top of that, courage and change seem to go hand in hand. For someone like me who's been dwelling in my comfort zone, to change does need a lot of courage.

To be able to run again after 10 years of being stagnant took me a lot of courage. I must say, as absurd as it may sound, sadness is a good motivator. I had a desire for running - yes BUT I could never lift up my legs until I was heartbroken. I had excessive energy when I was sad so I told myself to channel my energy to do something good - like burning it.

Here's the funny part, after I got over my sadness, I no longer feel like running.

* Ok, at this point I'm thinking how to continue my narration... I'll try...*

Truth is deep down, running has a greater reason for me. I begin to see that life is more than just how much I earn or what job I do for a living. Running gives me a sense of freedom and joy that money can't buy. Running reminds me that I'm breathing and my heart is pumping alive. Running makes me hear the wind blowing against my direction, the waves hitting on the shore, the laughter of people at play; lets me feel the cold of the rain; allows me to see the shuffling cotton clouds and the baby kites thriving in the wind... When I looked up, there was a black eagle circling on top. Just as I thought, the strong wind would blow me off or the rain would make me sick and most of all should I be going home... I wonder how that black eagle feel when he's gliding high up in the sky when lightning's striking and sheets of rain pouring.

Before I ran the 8km in Malakoff Penang, I was a coward fearing that I couldn't meet my goal. Anyway, I did it and I can't be any happier. In fact, I completed 8km a couple of days before the race and I completed another one today and it doesn't feel so much as killer as it once did. I could go on and on and I could fall asleep at the 8km boast.

This is really time to say goodbye if I want to make another milestone in my life.

So, next stop, 12.87km!

*xoxo*
